Although baby massage is relatively new to the western world, research has shown that for centuries it has been an integrated practice in many eastern and African traditional cultures.

There is no substitute for a parent’s loving touch, but as a primary carer you can support the proper growth and healthy development of any infants you care for through application of massage. It is through touch that babies develop their first method of communication. Using gentle and delicate massage techniques, babies also learn comfort and familiarise themselves with security of being cared for emotionally.

Physically, massage stimulates the nerves, increases blood flow and strengthens the immune system. It can relieve a host of infant complaints from colic to constipation and is particularly useful in enhancing calm restful sleep.
