Maternity Nurses are not medically qualified or trained nurses. The word 'nurse' is derived from the century when it was common for babies to be taken care of by wet nurses.

A Maternity Nurse is someone who has often had a vast amount of experience in the care of newborn babies and would have some degree of training or a childcare qualification.

A Maternity Nurse works within the family home providing care to a newborn baby. The roles and responsibilities are to ensure that the baby is looked after and that their needs are fully met. This will include feeding the baby or supporting the Mother with breastfeeding, keeping feeding equipment in a sterile condition, ensuring the baby is kept clean (changing nappies, top & tail, bathing baby), supporting and advising the parents on all aspects of the baby's development, ensuring the baby is safeguarded at all times, adhering to government guidelines pertaining to the safe guidelines and practices.

A Maternity Nurse can work during the daytime or nighttime and can also undertake 24 hour live-in work. The Maternity Nurse is self-employed and will often need to have their own insurance for working in private homes, as well as have an up to date DBS Check.
